CSH Standard 5 Rated House

- 2nd February 09

We have joined research teams at Dawn Homes Ltd and South Lanarkshire College to develop the design for a detached 4 bedroom house that will achieve a Code for Sustainable Homes level 5 rating.

The achievement of a Code 5 rating will require exceptional performance over 9 separate categories (energy and CO2 emissions, water consumption, materials, surface water run-off, waste, pollution, health and well being, management and ecology) and will significantly exceed both the current Scottish Building Standards and forthcoming amendments due in May this year.

It is intended to use the construction phase as a teaching vehicle in itself, and once complete (anticipated August this year) the houses’ performance will be monitored over a 12 month period. The houses will stand in the college grounds and will go on to be used as research and teaching facilities.

An equally important aim of the project is to generate a viable prototype that can be commercially reproduced on a budget that will be suitable for both the private and social housing sectors. Dawn Homes’ involvement is part of their progressive approach to realising affordable housing that achieves the Government required rating well in advance of the target year, 2016.
