On the back of 20 years experience in Residential design, Jewitt Arschavir & Wilkie have now committed resources at Director level for a PhD thesis research programme at the University of Strathclyde’s Department of Architecture to study the effect that prescriptive regulations have upon the thinking and design processes of architects, engineers and clients.
Over a 4 year period, it is intended to analyse current guidelines and develop an alternative palette of urban design tools that serve to introduce a greater degree of innovation in contemporary urban design to ultimately reinforce public safety.
By referencing successful practices from continental Europe, JAW are working closely with legislators, implementers, fellow designers, engineers, law enforcers, insurers, safety consultants, manufacturers and above all, users, in order to verify the hypothesis of the PhD.
In time we propose to implement the conclusions of the research through a pilot test-case scenario, employing close co-operation with a Local Authority and Developer Partnership. Ultimately, this will facilitate the development of Consultancy Services in Urban Design and Integrated Traffic Safety Programmes.
